Going Beyond Raw: Why I May Eat Cooked Again, Oct. ’15 Newsletter

I’m writing you from high on a hill, up in the sky from a 15th century medieval stone village, in Italy’s central land of Tuscany.  It’s so ancient and reminiscent of romance; as the old shares its story with the new through aged architecture, cobble stone streets, grape vines, and olive trees.

If the stone could speak, it would surely tell tales that would melt our hearts – fables of folklore, of spiritual quests and quandaries, of love and longing, hopes and fears, and everything in between.

In the old times, those living especially close to Earth, would probably be called a witch, and shared their information with only the most trusted.  Still in these times, we may be considered odd and even threatening for stepping out of conventional ways of eating, living, medicating, and being.

Do you ever feel persecuted, judged, or even rejected for your “witchy ways”?  Lately this topic has led me into a deeper self-inquiry that’s been a life and game changer – as I know life happens for me, not to me.

A few years ago, feeling quite restless and discontent with a rawfoodist label and how it was affecting me, I found myself – after 9 years of 100% raw, and intensive fasting – sitting in an Ethiopian restaurant in Amsterdam.  I felt so content that no one knew me, and “normal” – like everyone else.  I had a glass of wine, and thoroughly enjoyed my first cooked food in many years, though the old guilt and fear of “doing something wrong” returned.  I knew this meant a deeper self-inquiry was being called for.

That day started an intensive investigation within.  “Why do I eat raw food, why do I “teach” this topic, and what’s happening within me”?  After living something for a long time, have you had a version of this conversation with yourself?  It was quite disturbing, as my personal identity and constructs were shattering.  Absolutely everything in my life, and in my mind was up for inquiry and questioning. In this period, I let go of a negative partnership, stopped working like crazy, and released a lot of self-pressure around how I “keep myself together.”  It’s been an amazing journey that’s helped me to break out of a self-imposed box, gain courage to grow beyond certain concepts, expand into something else, and find true love for who I am, rather than what I do…  and to eventually find love with a different type of man, I never thought I’d be with.

Do you love someone who isn’t into raw food, cleansing, health, etc.?  Yes, many of us do. Is finding integration with your witchy ways/health choices, loved ones, and the world on your radar?

Beyond a need for belonging, and at times lonely due to my food and lifestyle choices – this grand experiment into intensive self-honesty has shown me how I actually alienate myself, by defining who I am with labels such as raw food, detox, doctor, teacher, partner, boss, this, that, etc.  One thing is sure, there’s so much more to life, you and me, than how we label ourselves. Uninvestigated, we may get stuck – or feel trapped – in some of the preordained ideas we find shelter in to feel safe, secure, and “good enough”.  Been feeling restless or the need for change and growth?  Maybe you’ve outgrown some identities or definitions of yourself that no longer fit?

I’ve also learned that typically the need for love and connection – over time – is often far greater than “making the right food and lifestyle choices.” If my heart isn’t fully met, common interests and health habits can only go so far.  Inviting love based on who I Really Am, rather than how I label myself – wow, I attract different people into my life.  For example, as a self-identified raw foodist, I would only be with a man who eats and lives within my same habits.  More integrated into my own needs, heart, and true sense of self, I’ve actually fallen in love with a man who often has very different food and health choices than my own.  I learn much through our differences, and my heart has never been happier.

Why do we develop such identities?  For me it had to do with attempting to keep my wild and crazy nature  “on the straight and narrow,” and to free myself from “societies sicknesses.” Eating only raw was natural and effortless for a long time.  Though once it wasn’t, if I didn’t let it go, that identity would rule my life, rather than my own truth leading the way. Self-growth practices help me tremendously – and when I realize I’ve become unconsciously attached and defined by them, I’m reminded to let go again – and instead choice to be true to myself, rather than loyal to a persona.  Do you use “spiritual” practices to tame the tiger of desire, while wrestling with the bigger questions?  To what extend do practices help you?  To what degree do they incur an identity?

Beyond raw food identities, I’ve gotten back to why I started this path in the first place, almost 20 years ago. From the beginning, it completely regenerated my health, prevented early stages of uterine cancer from developing, and freed me from many negative habits.  It’s also been a catalyst that continues unlocking other ways of thinking, and has led to greater states of self-love, healing, and thriving.  After experimenting with some cooked vegan food again in the past few years, for me the recalculation is very clear. Eating a high raw, to all raw diet, with regular fasting is foundation in how my body best responds for excellent health.  It’s been highly reflective and educational to not feel as well as I usually do, to have had a couple of little colds (I hadn’t been sick in years), and in general witness my vitality drop to some degree. As I refocus on what works best for me, enriched with a panoramic view and awareness of how labels keep me from me, I realize I no longer need identities as coping system to “control” myself, or keep on track.  What’s most important is that I’m honest, real, and myself – moment to moment. Though not always easy, and often at high stakes, I’d rather dig deep within myself for truth, than be superficially content with coping mechanisms masked as the Real Me.

It’s brought me all the way back to me, just me. Not Dr. Amy, this person’s teacher, or that “raw food” person.  After much break down, tear down, and now in a regeneration phase, I have much more understanding and compassion for what people go through who want to make healthier choices, and the struggle it can be.  Most important, I feel unguarded and without defense for the first time in my life, and free of how I’ve used food and detox to protect myself. I’m very thankful to re-approach these tools in a different, more well rounded way.

My true witchy self is just fine if she doesn’t eat all raw, or if she does.  It feels good that my self-worth is no longer wrapped up in what I eat or don’t eat, what I do or don’t do, etc.

Love from Me… wherever this may find you on your path.

Need some support on this topic?

To go beyond raw, detox, and any person, place, thing or belief you may be attached to as “right”, “the way” (or may keep you from you and love), here are some questions:

•   do I labeI myself? If so, how (“I am a raw foodist”, “I am a doctor”, etc.)?

•   what are my true needs (need to feel safe, to be healthy, etc.) beyond labels and identities (“I choose to be healthy”, rather than “I am a raw foodist and that is most healthy”)?

•   am I FULLY honest with myself?  What does this mean to me?

•   if I’m not fully honest with myself, is there something within I don’t want to look at?  (Be gentle and easy with yourself, self-acceptance and self-forgiveness are key… they open doors to full honesty and healing).

•   fully honest with myself, what are my values… beyond labels or self-imposed identities…. that support my health and well being?

•   am I attached to food, substances, people or a place that I defend or feel the need to justify?

•   do I experience attachments that show up in my life?  If so, what are they? What do they look and feel like?  How do they affect me, and those in my life?

•   do I pay a price for being attached to certain choices in my life?

how can I best honor and take care of myself, beyond attachments, identities, or ideas I have about what is most healthy?

The Road of Receiving: 7 Tips for Getting What You Want

The Road of Receiving
7 Tips for Getting What You Want

Heading into the fall season in the west, and summer in the east, I’m writing you on a plane that’s about to land back home in Bali, after 5 months of constant travel.  As I’ve journeyed, the different seasons, cities, climates, and terrains bring to mind the continuous cycle of life and death that’s constantly shedding – and simultaneously recreating itself.

Staying in balance and harmony with this natural force within myself, probably like you, I’m constantly challenged to truly take care of myself, and therefore self-reinvent – especially when I’m constantly on the go, and I realize the need to allow time and space to integrate (to receive) all the changes taking place.  I ask myself, “Am I really taking it all in, instead of racing to the next car, train, or plane?

Most important, beyond objectives, plans, and desires, are we truly receiving each moment, all we experience – no matter the contour or color – right now?  Many of us pray for health, abundance, love, etc., though do we actually receive it – as if basking in the sunrays? If only we soaked in all that we work so hard for, longed in anguish over, and hoped for with intensity.

Here’s 7 tips – a writing exercise if you choose – in opening the doors wide for receiving your heart’s call, love, and life in general.

  1. Check Your Inner Awareness Barometer – Take A Self-Reading.
  • “Am I fully present within myself – to my heart?”
  • “Am I receiving the deeper calls of my heart?  What are they?”

      2.  Find Out What You Need

  • “What deeper need is being fulfilled beneath my hearts call?”
  • “What do I need to stay in continuous touch with it and what does this look like?”
  1. Reinvent: Your Self-Vision
  • What are the habits of receiving and reinvention, based on your true hearts calling?
  • Day to day, how do you feel living the habits that allow you to truly receive your hearts call, life, and others?
  1. Account for Challenges
  • How are you challenged in developing new habits that allow you to receive?
  • A support system helps hold you accountable for receiving your hearts call, love from others, opportunities, etc.  What is yours?
  1. Receiving Opportunities
  • Is receiving a key component in getting what you want?
  • What are the potential opportunities that exist for you by truly and fully receiving what life is offering you?
  1. Plan of Action
  • Suggestion:  create a map, or a vision board, depicting your vision for receiving.   Meditate on it daily.  Note:  Prayer is the act of asking, and meditation is the act of receiving.
  • Outline how you’re inspired to start.  Example:  receiving a smile from a stranger, taking time instead of doing more, allowing others to help you.
  1. Activation
  • Act on the messages, and therefore direction you receive.  Acting on how you are guided from within strengthens and completes the circuit.  You know the expression, “use it or lose it.”J
  • Keep reinforcing habits that position you to receive – allowing you to build, rather than expend energy and resources.

Detox Q&A from Dr. Amy

I have some questions. Since the retreat I have been extremely sensitive to almost everything. I have eaten very little, and still on fasting days, I feel disturbed in my bowls. Also very gassy all the time. However, I have had regular and comfortable visits to the toilet. But it feels like I have become too rigid and nervous concerning foods in general. My mind is not relaxed and is fearful of ingesting.

I experiment with different foods, juices and blends, but there is no patterns which direct me in what to eat. A green juice can hurt more than a coffee etc.

Can you help me?

Amy writes:

What you’re experiencing isn’t uncommon in the beginning phases of the detox
process. I know it can seem frustrating, and concerning in terms of where you
find your mind at times. Know this is natural and all a part of the long term
cleansing process. It takes much experimentation, learning to be flexible and
unsure at times – and getting to know just how much congestion we have in
the beginning. This will change over time by allowing yourself to find your way
organically – letting go of expectations, pressure, or fear of doing things wrong…
experimenting is really how we learn, listening to the results of how the body
reacts, and adjusting. You’re learning your body, so you may not know what to
eat or do at times, though by sticking with it in a relaxed, aware, and non-rigid
way, you have the opportunity to really get to know (through trail and error)
what it needs.

Technically speaking, it sounds like you’ve hit major pockets of gas – actually
your symptoms are good new because it means your body is stirring up, and
attempting to eliminate the old waste… with time and keeping with your practice
and awareness of your body’s response, it will come out. It works in stages.
Typically first we have a hard belly (remember how you learned this about yourself
in class?) – this indicates dry, hard, compacted waste stored in the small and large
intestines. It could seem quite deceiving because you have such a beautiful flat
belly – though nonetheless, it was quite back up when you were here in Bali a few
months ago. Now through your diligence, the waste is loosening – which is the first
step in it becoming soluble enough to turn to slush and come out. In this stage, there
is often much gas pressure/storage to deal with that can cause cramping, bloating, and
pain. It’s enough to make you not want to eat anything, and often the mind can become
rigid here because we think we should be doing things a certain way. Likely your body
would prefer to fast now – even on just simple blends. When your digestion is congested,
and food isn’t working, we may need a break from eating, and only consume mushy/liquid
foods that are easy to digest… and that help turn hard old backed up stuff into soft slush.
This takes time, patience, and lots of letting go. You’re likely faced with emotional tension
at the same time. Are you storing stress in your belly? This will also cause constriction,
churning, and in turn a rough feeling in the body – and it’s compounded because you’re usually
not eliminating well (even if you are pooping twice per day – you’re still constipated, just not
quite as bad as when you first started… so see you are making progress).

The danger in this stage is when we don’t understand what’s happening with our body, we get
frustrated, and often end of doing what everyone else is doing – which means consuming foods,
holding stress, and in general not digesting well… of course you’ll likely feel frustrated and not
knowing what to do.

Here’s some suggestions:

1. Be sure to be drinking minimum 3 liters of water and/or tea, fresh vegetable juice (except
carrot and beet since too high in sugar), lemonade, etc… all clear liquids with no fiber. Even more
is better, given the amount of gas pressure you have (which remember, indicates there is a whole
lot of backed up poo with that the gas is blocking). Get it wet enough, consistently, so it can move.
2. Identify where you may be contributing to intestinal holding and keep letting go… this means
emotionally, with foods that are difficult to digest, do things you don’t want to do (stress), and in
general not listening to your body and intuition.
3. Do a daily enema each morning on an empty stomach after drinking a few liters of water. You could
do this for weeks, considering how backed up you’ve been/gassy. This is critical in getting out waste
your peritalsis muscle is to weak to eliminate naturally. Once you’ve gotten out enough (and some
sessions may be nothing be gas – good!), then you’re body will recover from any dependency from enemas
and likely start working much better on its own. Be patient and persistent.
4. Do a colonic at least once per week, as well as the enemas to really good deep with the cleansing.
5. Avoid dehydrated foods, too much fat, and anything non-juicy or difficult to digest.
6. What stresses you? Let go lots – live as stress free as possible by facing emotions, and letting them go.
7. Are you exercising regularly? If not, this will help much to increase your circulation.

So in essence love, please be patient with your self and non-rigid, experiment with different foods that may also may not always be raw, if that’s what your body is calling for. Keep letting go, and allowing yourself just to be, and remember its more about going slow, step by step, rather than attempting to force your body to do something its just not ready for. Enjoy each phase, be curious without goals or agendas around it… just do it for yourself, and keep letting go. From this place you can slow down with ease, enjoy the process, and truly learn from your

Let me know you do, and feel free to ask for help.

Big hug and love,

Amy Rachelle

Amy’s Naturopathic & Intuitive Life Direction Readings

Hello Friends…

Ever find yourself on a whirlwind, yet somehow centered amongst it – or knowing your balance may be a bit wobbly and you’re ready to regain stability?

Nothing like constant change to remind us we were never really in control anyway, and that life has its own directive. Seems that as we align with change, things are more calm – and there’s opportunity for release and refuge – even in the storm.  Underneath what may feel unsteady in a consistent state of change… is often stability in the center, no matter the external circumstances, like the quite at the bottom of a turbulent sea.

Leaving my home in Bali a few weeks ago to arrive in my native USA, the chilly weather, taking care of a loved one unexpectedly, and rising to the challenges of old family dynamics – I’m offered the opportunity to witness where I resist change – and where I may otherwise unconsciously fall into my old default pattern of withdrawal, endure, and shut down.  Sitting in meditation, reflecting, and ultimately taking 100% responsibility, my heart opens again and I’m strengthened to welcome change, and viola – the center in the storm returns, it grounds and guides me, and reminds me that how I experience life isn’t about the outer world.

One thing that I know always works, no matter what’s happening externally, in relationships, work, etc. – is that if I take care of myself first (yes first – even if I fumble), then all else seems to take care of itself with less effort.  So this weekend I unexpectedly find myself in NYC as part of that care…  I love this place, with its calm chaos.  I hadn’t planned on coming this trip to the US, yet I’m so happy to be here and have decided to open up a few sessions this Saturday and Sunday. I only have a few times open, so email or call me asap to book in (you can read more about my sessions below*).

My Love To You – And Support Always.
